Winner: "Death Horse" by Austin Butler

Mr. Butler won the Audience Choice Award of $300

"Death Horse was made up in my bedroom probably two to three years ago by Patrick (who plays Bruce Braff) and I. it was pretty late at night and we were bored of playing video games. We had a little spiral memo notepad and we said, "Hey, let's make up a movie." We came up with the title, some silly names, and a bit of the "plot," if you could call it that. We pretty much forgot about it after that. Then, in Spring 2007 at Palomar College I took a video production class. The final project in the class was a ten-minute short film. Everyone had to pitch their idea to the class and then we would all vote for our favorites. Four projects would be picked and we would be assigned groups. I hadn't come up with anything by the time we had to pitch an idea, so I used Death Horse thinking it wouldn't be picked but I wouldn't fail the assignment, either. Well, it got picked. I had only one week to write the script. I wrote it one night in a couple of hours.
Death Horse is inspired by horror movies and is, in a way, a movie about horror movies. Before I wrote the script I watched a few horror movie trailers to get some ideas and get in the mood. I always laugh at the choices characters make in horror movies ("Hey look! A dark, empty old house on a stormy night! Let's spend the night! Uh oh! There's an Indian Burial Ground underneath us!") and how stupid they are, so that's what I was going for. Mostly, though, it was just for fun and for experience."
